本片改编自已故爱尔兰蠢才作家兼画家克里斯蒂•布朗的自传体小说。 基提（丹尼尔•戴-刘易斯 Daniel Day-Lewis 饰）生成大脑麻木身材残疾,只有左脚能灵巧如凡人。他不生涯自理才能,为家里带来了很大的累赘,幼时老是受到四周孩子的嘲弄,父亲几乎废弃他,而母亲（布兰达•弗里克 Brenda Fricker 饰）却始终对他悉心照料,不离不弃。基提心思苦闷却不克不及用言语来抒发,试图用左脚写字作画,垂垂地凭仗毅力跟伶俐,基提越来越掉掉落承认。母亲静静地为基提买了轮椅,之后他又掉掉落了艾莲大夫的收费救济。在艾莲的锤炼引诱下,基提的身材开端有了恶化。此时基提曾经爱上了艾莲。某日艾莲将基提的画推举到了友人的画廊展出。停止后基提向艾莲抒发爱意,却被她谢绝......
